Food Review: King Kolossalz? King Krap!

So, Burger King got into the frozen microwave french fry business, selling 4.5-ounce boxes in three varieties:  ”King Krinkz” (crinkle-cut), “King Kolossalz” (large fries) and “King Wedgez” (seasoned wedges). The boxes are as narrow as a slim paperback book, and are about 10 inches high and about 7 inches wide at the top, tapering to about four inches wide at the bottom, like so:

After venting the box and microwaving with it lying down flat, you turn the box back upright, tap the bottom on the table to shake the fries into the bottom, and then tear off the top three-quarters of the box at the score lines, leaving you with the familiar fast-food fry box.

We got the “King Kolossalz” version at Giant, just to try them out. I believe they were something like $2.99 a box. While the packaging is well-designed, and the special lining inside the box does a good job of crisping the fries, we were disappointed that there were only 14 fries in the box. Fourteen lousy fries, and at least three of them were stubs from the very end of the potato, no bigger than the end of your pinky finger. Now, these are supposedly the “extra-large fries”, but apparently by that, Burger King just means they aren’t shoestring cut, because even the normal-looking fries in the box are smaller than a “steak-fry” cut.

So in our opinion, the “Ore-Ida Easy Fries” remain a better value, and a better-tasting fry, albeit with less flashy packaging:

You’re paying for the brand name, not for the fries.
